EMMA YUE RELEASED A NEW TRACK A WHILE BACK AND WE'RE PRETTY NOSEY OVER HERE AT WIZARD WATER, WE THOUGHT WE'D DIVE RIGHT IN.
TRACK NAME IS - LONELY LOVER- LISTEN HERE This is a paid collaboration with Emma Yue
Hey Emma! "Lonely Lover" has such a vibe – can you tell us what sparked the inspiration behind this track?
Lonely Lover was created in a moment of spite and defiance against a feeling that had been plaguing me for a few years. Loneliness is something a lot of people feel and struggle with, and I was seeing all these little reminders of friendships I didn’t feel like I had. Most of those were childhood friendships, and I was reflecting on how moving twice when I was younger had really had this long term effect on my life that was only feeling many years after the fact.
Your music has this cool blend of chill melodies and lush production. How do you get into that creative zone when you're making music?
I’m a feelings gal, almost all of my music is written as a form of catharsis for whatever emotion I’m dealing with at the time and Lonely Lover is no exception. Getting into the zone can be really easy when songwriting is a form of therapy (Medicare wanna chip in for my music gear?) but really difficult when I don’t have an emotion I feel like I can draw from. Luckily life is a whole rollercoaster, so I usually have something that really kickstarts my songwriting brain into writing a song.
I love how real and raw "Lonely Lover" feels. How do you keep your music authentic and relatable?
I write almost exclusively from personal experience, and try not to shy away from the uglier side of emotions or thoughts that I’ve had. Sometimes it’s like sharing my diary with the world which can be a little spooky, but I love creating cathartic music and authenticity comes pretty easily and naturally when writing from that perspective.
The hooks in your songs are super catchy! What's your secret to crafting those memorable lines?
Honestly I have no answers for you on this one, I usually know a song has potential when a line or melody I’ve written keeps getting stuck in my head.
Your vocals always hit the spot – how do you balance expressing emotion with staying in control during performances?
This is definitely something I’m still navigating and working on, often when I sing just with emotion I lose a lot of vocal control, and when I’m thinking a lot about vocal control I lose a lot of emotion in my voice. I’m getting better with it though and really just enjoying performing and gigging around Melbourne.
So, what's next for you after "Lonely Lover"? Any exciting projects or collabs in the works?
I’ve been working on heaps behind the scenes which has been really fun so far!! I’m in the studio at least once a week working on some new music and taking a bit of a new direction with my sound which has been super fun to explore. If you keep an eye out you’ll definitely be seeing some new music from me this year, and potentially a collaboration or two.
Your live shows are always a vibe. How do you prep for gigs, and what can we expect from your upcoming show?
My favourite part of gig prep is band rehearsals, we always have a bit of a catch up and yap and my band just makes playing music really fun. They’re such good friends of mine which means there’s a lot of joking around and side quests (as we call them) and they just make it all so much fun.
Your music has this way of creating a vibe that just pulls us in. How do you draw inspiration from your own experiences to shape your sound?
Very much so! I’m not entirely sure where my sound comes from as someone who grew up exclusively listening to the ABBA Gold album, but as I’ve gotten older I can definitely see a lot of Taylor Swift influence in my songs. Like her, I tend to write pretty autobiographically and use song writing as a form of catharsis.
"Lonely Lover" really speaks to everyone – how do you turn your personal stories into music that connects with so many people?
To put it plainly, I’m not that special. A lot of my experiences and emotions are things that so many people have also gone through. Loneliness is such a universal feeling, and my music tends to lean towards themes like relationships, mental health and self identity which are all things everyone has some sort of relationship with.
Looking ahead, where do you see your music journey taking you? Any big dreams or goals you're chasing?
I’m absolutely a dreamer, my ultimate big dream is to be able to tour with music, even as a support act for another artist. I try not to think about music too realistically because my brain will promptly spiral, so for now I’m just focusing on making music I love and that feels cathartic to create and hoping the rest will follow.
