FLIP THAT GROOVE | INTERVIEW + TRACK REVIEW

In a city known for its genre-bending creativity and collaborative spirit, Flip That Groove and Madam Nightingale are carving out a sound that’s both soulful and bold. Their latest release, Beyond A Doubt, is a layered, emotionally rich track born from spontaneous studio sessions, shared trust, and a mutual love for deep storytelling through sound.

Built during years of creative growth and fuelled by Naarm’s dynamic music community, the track blends hip hop beats, stripped-back guitar, and haunting vocal textures into something intimate yet cinematic. We caught up with Flip That Groove to dive into how the track came together, the power of collaboration, and what’s next as they gear up for their new EP Hip Tactic.

TRACK REVIEW

Like a harmonious melody you could listen to all day, Beyond a Doubt sees Flip That Groove deliver another absolute banger for the books. The track is rich, soulful, and effortlessly catchy—one of those songs that feels like it locks into your bloodstream from the first listen.

Madam Nightingale’s voice sounds completely natural here, like it was made for this track. Her delivery floats perfectly over the top of the beat, adding a smooth, emotional weight that pulls you deeper into the soundscape.

The production is exceptional—clean, layered, and dynamic without ever feeling crowded. Every element finds its place and complements the next, making Beyond a Doubt feel both intimate and expansive.

And that “Livin’ in the moment” chant? Absolutely epic. It takes the whole track to another level, lifting it into a full-blown anthem that stays with you long after it ends.

Tell us about your latest release with Madam Nightingale. How did the collaboration come together and what themes or ideas were you both exploring?

Beyond A Doubt is our latest release together. We have been working on a variety of projects for a couple of years now and we are both getting used to each other’s creative process in the studio. We tend to work very fast as it’s happening in the studio.

This track came about from an idea I had of stripping back sounds to the simplest form for the composition. I wanted to highlight the vocal style that Madam Nightingale has, with her deep layering and top-lining skill set she uses in the studio when we create. As the song evolved, Madam Nightingale was developing the lyric content and storyline about living in the moment as a topic of consolidating happiness.

Your music always weaves so many genres together. With this track, what sounds or emotions were you most drawn to in the creative process?

Yeah, we are all about tapping into our own influences, then using them to bring about a fusion of sounds that are layered deep in the mix.

Working with other artists allows us to bring our shared influences to the studio. This track Beyond A Doubt has a compilation of hip hop beats and samples with a simple guitar melody holding the main structure together. Then as the vocals come in, there’s a lustful presence sitting in the sounds, offering a layered, sensual song about opportunity, joy, and love.

How does working with an artist like Madam Nightingale shape or shift the way you approach songwriting and production?

Madam Nightingale allows me to explore more musical options as a composer and producer. She allows me freedom to be creative in the studio. I’m also very grateful that she trusts me with her art to produce music in this way.

Flip That Groove celebrates collaboration and diversity. What does that look like behind the scenes when you’re building a project like this?

Collaboration is fundamental to our project development. Having like-minded artists that also celebrate diversity and respect in our community here in Naarm.

I love when we go into a studio together. This is my playground where I feel most comfortable. It’s a safe place for sharing ideas, art, and music.

Do you find that your music leans into storytelling, activism, or something else entirely? What do you want listeners to walk away with?

Activism through storytelling is an old, natural form of communication which allows us to use music as the media to deliver a message, be true to ourselves, and our collective art.

We hope listeners can resonate with either the storyline or just groove on the tunes.

Live performance and energy seem like big parts of what you do. If you were to bring this track to the stage with Madam Nightingale, what kind of vibe would you want to create?

I’m an old school musician. I like smoke machines and deep hues in lighting on stage, where Madam Nightingale has a very cool and dynamic costume and stage show. We will have a few compromises to bring our collective vibe to a live show—and that’s fine. Compromise comes with collaboration.

Is there a moment in the song that surprised you while creating it – something that just clicked or took the track to a whole new level?

There is always a moment when a song gives me goosebumps when we are creating in the studio. This song always felt too quick in the tempo, but when we recorded the vocals, it felt like it slowed the track down and allowed the lyrics to shine for all.

I love it when the song dynamic changes in the studio.

In a scene like Naarm’s where so many cultures and genres blend, how does Flip That Groove reflect or contribute to the local music community?

I love the live music scene here. It is so incredibly dynamic in styles and genres. We are a melting pot of art and music choices. I’m more of a consumer here—I’m out seeing bands and shows most weekends. This is where I get inspiration from.

Are there any artists, past or present, who’ve shaped your thinking around collaboration and pushing creative boundaries?

Alan Vega and Suicide just blew my mind—how advanced they were about exploring experimental sounds, pushing technology, and helping create new boundaries.

What’s next for Flip That Groove? Any more collabs on the way or plans to bring these tracks to new audiences?

Flip That Groove are heading back to the studio using a new horn section and big bass sound in May for a new EP called Hip Tactic, which is going to be available on CD and all streaming services.
