From the moment they picked up a guitar at age 12, musikbysix has been chasing the groove. With a deep love for acid jazz, funk, and soul passed down from their dad’s record collection, their journey started in covers bands—taking on tracks by Incognito, Macy Gray, and Brand New Heavies—before stepping into the spotlight with original music. After years of refining their sound on stage, musikbysix is now crafting a unique fusion of neo-soul, funk, blues and pop, blending thoughtful lyricism with undeniable rhythm. As they gear up to release their debut EP and take their originals to the stage later this year, we caught up to talk musical roots, spontaneous songwriting sessions, and the dream of one day collaborating with Tom Misch.
TRACK REVIEW
The intense build-up in the intro grabs you immediately—then that bass drops like a punch right to the soul, hitting all the good feels. From the get-go, Will You Be Ready locks you into a deep, immersive vibe. The sampling is flawless, creating a warm, nostalgic space while still sounding fresh.
The bassline is a standout moment—groovy, fluid, and unmistakably Thundercat-inspired. It weaves its way through the track, giving it both rhythm and attitude. Layered with rich, interesting key tones and textured sounds scattered throughout, the production remains dynamic and full of movement. The track doesn’t sit still—it evolves, pulling you along with it, and keeps you in that sweet state of mind long after it ends. A sonic journey you’ll want to ride on repeat.
Tell us a bit about your journey, what first sparked your love for music and performing live?
I started playing guitar when I was around 12yrs old and just fell in love with it. I used to listen to my Dads old records like Pink Floyd the Doors lot of old school stuff like. The more I listened to different types of music I found what I really enjoyed which was acid jazz, funk, fusion, blues. I joined a band and we played covers from bands like Incognito, Macy Gray, Brand New Heavies.
You’ve been on stage since you were 17. What’s been your most memorable performance moment so far?
playing festivals whether in parks or street festivals is always fun. I realised that I was meant to be on stage.
You recently started writing original music, what inspired you to finally make that leap into songwriting?
I’ve been in covers bands since my teen years and as much fun as it is I wanted to push myself and write my own music.
Sorry for the delay here, it was difficult to craft questions for you, haha. Not to worry, all done now!
How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard your music before?
It’s a mixture of neo soul/funk/pop and blues
Is there a lyric or theme you’re exploring on your upcoming EP that feels especially personal to you?
Not so much a theme lyrically as it can change depending on what’s going on in my life at the time but my lyrics will continue to try build people up and provoke thoughts and ideas. The music I have released already and still releasing is a lot of self reflection.
Which artists or bands have shaped the way you write, perform, or think about music?
My sound is quite unique but I love music/bands like Snarky Puppy, John Mayer, Moonchild, Incognito, Tom Misch
Do you write with live shows in mind, or does the performance element come after the songwriting is done?
I’ve been picturing playing original songs live my whole life, the live shows will have a bit of jamming, solos from different band members.
What does a typical writing session look like for you, guitar in hand? Late night voice memos?
Voice memos especially if it’s a guitar riff keyboard line or bass line. Sometimes I’ve written an idea for a song while at work without intentionally meaning too.
You’re planning shows for later this year, what kind of vibe do you want people to walk away with after seeing you live?
There’s a lot of groove in my songs I also have some funk type songs coming out I already recorded last year so there’s a bit of everything.
Lastly, if you could collaborate with any artist, local or global - who would it be and why?
Tom Misch just because he’s Tom Misch. If you haven’t heard his beat tapes 1 and 2 plus his geography album then you’re missing out.
